Battle for a drug-free workplace continues
By Mike Sanders, founder of ExecuCare ARC

Most of us have encountered a co-worker, associate, vendor or even a boss who was addicted to alcohol or drugs. It’s not surprising, considering that a 2001 survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services revealed that 10.2 million out of 13.4 million illicit drug users age 18 or older were employed. That is 76.4 percent of users.
The good news from that report is that monthly drug use between 1985 and 1992 had declined from nearly 17 percent in 1985 to only seven percent in 1992, where it remained through the 2001 report.
The fact remains that drug abuse in the workplace is a problem that many HR departments and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are dealing with on a daily basis. Employed drug abusers cost their employers about twice as much in medical and worker compensation claims as their drug-free coworkers.
Obviously, the work to bring that percentage down continues. And the September 2006 opening of ExecuCare Addiction Recovery Center in Metro Atlanta, which is focusing on bringing compassionate, effective and speedy recovery for executives, is a sign of on-going efforts to reduce this problem.
ExecuCare ARC is an alcohol and drug abuse treatment center, using a 10-day intravenous treatment of specially-formulated amino acids that quickly reduce cravings and minimize withdrawal symptoms. This outpatient method is able to address alcohol addiction and a broad range of drug addictions, including methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine, as well as addiction to a list of prescriptions drugs.
